Field Hockey Edged, 3-2, in Overtime by Houghton

Box Score

An overtime goal by Houghton's Adria Bridgwood in the 73rd minute lifted the host Highlanders to a 3-2 victory over the Oswego State field hockey team on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Lakers drop to 2-7 with the setback, while the Highlanders climb to 4-3.

Oswego State saw a two-goal lead evaporate, as Houghton scored two goals in a span of 2:10 midway through the second half to level the tally. After the Highlanders were granted a penalty corner in the second minute of the overtime period, Bridgwood cashed in on an Ashley Engle pass to seal the victory for Houghton.

Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) put the Lakers on the board just 1:21 into the contest, as she scored unassisted. Neither team was able to find the back of the cage the remainder of the half, and Oswego State held a 1-0 edge at the break.  Ashley Collins (So., Whitney Point, N.Y.) converted a penalty-stroke attempt at 38:20 to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead, but Rachel Stefanski and Engel each scored at 52:10 and 54:20, respectively, to knot the score at 2-all. Stefanski used a pass from Jillian Watts to set up her score, while Watts and Stefanski were credited with a double assist on a penalty-corner goal by Engel.

Oswego State outshot Houghton, 10-7, on the afternoon and both teams took seven penalty corners. Hillery Duman earned the win in net for the Highlanders, making six stops, while Julie Janusz (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss in the Laker cage, turning aside two shots.

The victory for the Highlanders evens the season series between the two programs, as Oswego State blanked Houghton, 2-0, when they met on Sept. 3 in Oswego.

The Lakers look to get back in the win column on Friday, Sept. 30, when they resume State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a 4 p.m. game against New Paltz at home. Seven of Oswego State's final nine contests will be contested on the South Athletic Field.
