Less than 24 hours after falling in double overtime to Oneonta, the Oswego State women's soccer team managed just seven shots and two shots on goal in a 3-0 loss at New Paltz on Saturday afternoon.
Beth Bowling scored a goal in both halves for the Hawks while teammate Samantha Abravanel recorded a goal and an assist to drop the Lakers to 0-2-0 in SUNYAC after the opening weekend of conference play. Oswego State is 6-3-0 overall. New Paltz improved to 2-0-0 in SUNYAC and 6-2-1 overall.
Bowling recorded her first of two goals at 37:54 to give the Hawks a one-goal lead. Less than a minute earlier, the Hawks' Rebecca Rothman had a shot blocked from the top of the box that was eventually controlled by teammate Eleni Anselmi. Anselmi found Bowling at the top of the box with a pass from midfield and Bowling was able to beat Oswego State goalkeeper
Emily Varonier (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) on the left side.
In the first half, New Paltz held a 14-3 advantage in shots, but only three shots made it on net.
The Hawks took control of the game in the second half with two goals just over a minute apart from one another. Abravanel gave New Paltz a two-goal lead at 55:12 after receiving a pass from Shelby Kondelka from the middle of the field and striking a ball past Varonier toward the left side of the net.
Bowling would score her second goal of the game at 56:08 with the assist being awarded to Abravanel. Bowling's second goal of the game ended Varonier's day in net, as she was replaced by
Steph Hotaling (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.). Varonier finished the game with five saves on eight shots. Hotaling would play the final 18:23, recording two saves on two shots faced. Stephanie Vega made two saves on two shots faced to earn the win in net for the Hawks.
In the second half, New Paltz outshot the Lakers 18-4. Oswego State registered just one shot on goal in each half.
Prior to the game, the Lakers had owned a 9-4-3 record against the Hawks in 16 career meetings, including a 5-2-1 record at New Paltz.
The Lakers return home on Friday, Sept. 30, when they host Potsdam at 4 p.m. at Laker Field.
