SPENCERPORT, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's lacrosse team (5-1) lost its first game this week against No. 15 Ithaca, but one loss is not enough to deter the determined squad. On Saturday, the Lakers travel to Spencerport to face the Brockport Golden Eagles at 1 p.m. in the Oswego State Game of the Week.
Last season, it was Brockport that derailed the Lakers' hot start with a 12-5 win on March 30. Oswego State entered the game 7-0, with a huge triple-overtime win over Ithaca under its belt. The loss to Brockport triggered a slump that carried through the conference schedule, as the Lakers finished 8-7 overall and 1-5 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference.
This season, the Lakers are out for revenge.
Led by the one-two punch of sophomore
Cody Hoose (Syracuse, N.Y.) and senior captain
Casey Balzer (Nassau, N.Y.) at attack, who, interestingly enough, wear number one and two, the Lakers scored 10 or more goals in all five wins this season.
Hoose has paced the Lakers with 13 goals and 12 assists in the squad's first six games, while Balzer isn't far behind with 14 goals (most on team) and seven assists. In a 19-3 win over SUNYIT on March 15, the pair combined for 10 points.
In their most recent game, the Lakers were edged by the Bombers, 6-5, in yet another overtime game. Brockport has struggled thus far this season and currently sits at 2-5. In the Golden Eagles' last game, they fell 9-7 to Adrian. Oswego State had previously beaten Adrian, 10-8, two weeks earlier. The only other common opponent for the two teams is Elmira, who both the Lakers and Golden Eagles defeated.
The last time the Lakers beat the Golden Eagles was in 2010, as Brockport has won two straight matchups. Only two members of the current team, seniors
Josh Roetzer (Williamsville, N.Y.) and
Kyle DeRosa (Fairport, N.Y.), were a part of the squad during the last triumph against Brockport.
