OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team (5-7) scored the game's final five goals, but fell short in a 13-8 non-conference loss to Clarkson (8-4) on a windy Thursday afternoon at South Athletic Field. The Golden Knights were led by five goals from Katie VanDeWelk and three goals and three assists from Alyssa Cristaldi.
The Golden Knights started the game hot, scoring two goals in the opening two minutes. Clarkson goalie Kara DiNatale followed up with two free-position saves to keep the Lakers off the board. After another Clarkson goal, Oswego State's
Erannan Shattuck (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) took a pass from
Lindsey Eggers (Fr., Ridge, N.Y.) and found the back of the net to put the home team on the board ten minutes into the half.
Clarkson dominated ball possession for the rest of the half to take control of the contest, adding five more goals to its lead. The Lakers added another Shattuck goal with seven seconds left in the half to send Oswego State into halftime down, 8-2.
The Golden Eagles answered back immediately in the second half, scoring in the first minute of play. Both teams went scoreless for the next ten minutes before Eggers tacked on a goal to bring the Lakers to within six.
Clarkson responded with four consecutive goals to go up by ten with just under 15 minutes left to play to make the score 13-3.
Mackenzie Kjerstad (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) started Oswego State's late rally on an unassisted goal with 12:30 remaining in the contest. Goals from
Courtney Cosentino (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.), Kjerstad and two from
Becky Guess (So., Burnt Hills, N.Y.) brought the Lakers to within five, but that is as close as they would get as the Golden Knights picked up the win.
Kara DiNatale made eight saves for Clarkson, allowing six goals. Stephanie Lynch came off the bench and recorded one save and allowed two goals.
Nikki Greco (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.), finished the game with ten saves and allowed 13 goals.
The Lakers returns to conference play on Saturday at Brockport at 1 p.m.
