Baseball Shocks Babson with Four Runs in the Bottom of the Ninth

BOX SCORE

Winter Haven, Fla. – The Oswego State baseball team downed Babson College 7-6 in thrilling fashion, scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal the win. With the win, Oswego improves to 5-1 on the year while the Beavers fall to 0-3.

With the bases loaded, two outs and the score tied at 6-6, Tim Smith left first early, putting himself in a pickle. John Rauseo tried to make the best of the play, taking off for home and crossing the plate before Babson could tag Smith for the final out.

Dan Karleski started the comeback when he led off the ninth with a pinch-hit double down the leftfield line. Myles Kutscher then made a pinch-hit appearance, drawing a walk. The Lakers then loaded the bases with no outs when Dan Saccocio was hit by a pitch. Rauseo reached base on an error by the Beaver's shortstop, scoring Karleski to make the game 6-4. Scott Buniak's fly out in Oswego's next at-bat was too shallow to bring in a run but Mike McMullen earned a RBI with a base on balls to cut the Babson lead to one at 6-5.

Smith got on base with a fielder's choice that put McMullen out at second but allowed Saccocio to score. This is when Smith forced the action, giving Rauseo the ability to take home for the run and the win.

At the dish, Saccocio, Rauseo and McMullen all finished with two hits, with McMullen pacing the way with three RBI. Saccocio scored twice and drove in a run while Smith collected a RBI.

John-Michael Guarino earned the win with his perfect inning of work in the seventh. Jordan Giller started on the hill, throwing five innings in which he surrendered eight hits and five runs, four of which were earned.

Josh Martin relieved Giller, throwing the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to the tune of a one-hitter.

Oswego will return to the diamond at 3:30 p.m. on Monday when it faces Amherst College in a nine-inning contest in Winter Haven, Fla.
