No. 2 Geneseo Outlasts Lakers For SUNYAC Title

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's ice hockey team was defeated in the SUNYAC Championship game tonight, 4-1, by the No. 2 Geneseo Knights. They will await the NCAA Division III tournament selection on Monday at 10 a.m. eastern time for an outside chance of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Geneseo started the scoring in the SUNYAC Championship game just one minute and thirty-three seconds into the contest.
  • Oswego scored a goal of their own to tie the game at one. The goal was scored just eight seconds into a four-on-four scenario.
  • Senior Josh Zizek redirected a shot from the point off of the stick of Carter Allen, the goal was also assisted by Carson Vance.
  • In the second period, Geneseo used a 4-on-4 to thread a pass across the goalmouth to an open player on the backside of Steven Kozikoski for the 2-1 lead with 8:54 to go.
  • Five minutes later, the Knights threw a puck at the Oswego net where it was blocked out front and stopped in front of traffic.
  • Geneseo's David Szmyd got to it first and slapped a shot past Kozikoski through a crowd with 3:45 remaining in the period for a 3-1 lead.
  • Going into the third period, the Knights led the shot category 19-15.
  • Faceoffs were close going into the third period, they sat at 29-28 in favor of Geneseo.
  • The Lakers pulled their goalie in the final minutes and kept offensive pressure.
  • It was not enough as the Knights scored a full-ice empty netter to conclude the scoring and ice the win.
  • Carson Vance and Zizek were selected to the 2020 SUNYAC All-Tournament Team from the Lakers.

WHAT'S NEXT
Oswego will await the Monday NCAA Division III tournament selection at 10 a.m. eastern time to see if they can extend their 2019-20 season.
