Oswego State wins fourth straight game to start season

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team skated to a 5-2 victory over visiting Elmira at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego on Saturday night. The Lakers, ranked seventh nationally, are 4-0-0 on the season. The No. 4 Elmira Soaring Eagles are 0-2-0.

Freshman Neil Musselwhite and sophomore Brendan McLaughlin each had a goal and an assist in the Laker victory. McLaughlin opened the scoring by banging in a rebound of his own shot 8:30 into the contest. Musselwhite's first collegiate goal, a short-handed tally with 1:01 left to play in the first period, gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead.

Oswego State freshman defenseman Tyler Lyon scored a power-play goal with 5:35 left in the second period that extended the Laker lead to 3-1, and it proved to be the game-winning goal.

Elmira freshman center Jan Velich scored both Soaring Eagles goals while on the power-play. His second goal of the night came with 3:44 remaining in the second period and made it a 3-2 game.

Senior defenseman Ryan Koresky and sophomore forward Ryan Ellis scored in the third period to for Oswego State. Senior forward Ryan Woodward had two assists in the game.

It was the second consecutive win for Oswego State over Elmira, as the Lakers won Friday's game 2-1 at Elmira's Murray Athletic Center. The Soaring Eagles were 2-for-14 with the man advantage and Oswego State was 2-for-12, as the referees whistled a total of 31 minors in the game.

Laker goalie Ryan Scott improved made 32 saves on the night, with 18 stops coming in the third period. Elmira's Raphael Cundari had 24 saves.

Oswego State begins SUNYAC play next weekend, traveling to Brockport on Friday and Geneseo on Saturday.
