Oswego State scored three goals in the third period to defeat Elmira 4-1 in the championship game of the inaugural Pathfinder Bank Oswego Hockey Classic on Saturday at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego.
The Lakers broke a 1-1 tie 4:22 into the third period when sophomore defenseman Rich Zalewski made a pass from behind the Oswego State net all the way to the far blueline where Ryan Ellis picked it up and scored on a breakaway. The shot by Ellis beat Elmira goalie Casey Tuttle over the right shoulder.
Two late goals by the Lakers iced the game. Neil Musselwhite finished a pretty give-and-go play with Garren Reisweber to make the score 3-1 with 3:15 left. Matt Whitehead added an empty-netter on assists from Ryan Woodward and Tony DiNunzio to seal the victory.
Woodward opened the scoring for Oswego State in the first period, by banking a shot off of Tuttle into the net, as Woodward was standing behind the goal line.
Laker goalie Ryan Scott made 25 saves to earn the victory, and was voted as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Zalewski and Thompson. Elmira forward Justin Joy and defenseman Greg Moore were also on the all-tournament team, along with forward Kevin Rollwagen of St. Thomas.
Jan Velich scored for Elmira in the second period, and Tuttle finished the game with 23 saves.
The Lakers are now 13-0-3 on the season, while Elmira fell to 4-7-1.
