The Oswego State men's ice hockey team scored two goals in a span of 10 seconds to break a third-period tie and went on to a 4-3 victory over Geneseo on Saturday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena.
Brendan McLaughlin's second goal of the night and 20th of the season put Oswego State ahead 3-2 with 16:10 left in the third period. On the next shift, the Lakers won the face off and dumped the puck deep into the Geneseo zone, where Matt Whitehead's shot from behind the net ricocheted into the goal and the Lakers led 4-2. Whitehead's goal came just 10 seconds after McLaughlin's go-ahead goal.
Geneseo held 1-0 and 2-1 leads earlier in the game, but the Lakers tied it on each occasion. Trent Cassan opened the scoring for the Knights, on a pretty power-play goal with assists from Chris Kestell and Brett Bestwick. Oswego State tied it with three seconds left in the period, as Derrell Levy fed Brendan McLaughlin for a shot that beat goalie Derek Jokic between the pads.
The Knights went ahead again, just 1:53 into the second period on an unassisted goal by Casey Balog. Again, the Lakers tied it in the final minute of the period as Ryan Woodward crashed the net and scored with an assist going to Tony DiNunzio.
The quick-strike goals from the Lakers made it 4-2, and Geneseo reduced the deficit to 4-3 with Cassan's second goal of the night and 14th of the year. That came with 8:19 left to play and rounded out the scoring.
Jokic made 29 saves for the Knights, and Ryan Scott saved 18 shots for the Lakers.
The Lakers and Knights entered the game as the top two teams in the SUNYAC standings and the victory gives Oswego State a four-point lead over Geneseo with five conference games remaining in the regular season. Oswego State is 7-0-2 in the conference and 16-1-3 overall. Geneseo fell to 6-3-0 in the league, and 12-8-0 overall.
Oswego State is on the road next weekend, playing at Fredonia on Friday and at Buffalo State on Saturday.
