The Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated Cortland 4-1 on Friday night in the final game of the regular season. Oswego State improved to 20-2-3 overall and finished first in the SUNYAC with an 11-1-2 conference mark. Cortland fell to 8-14-3 and 3-8-3 in the SUNYAC, finishing in seventh place.
The Lakers scored three power-play goals in the game, including two in the first period.
C.J. Thompson opened the scoring with his 14th goal of the season, with 8:17 left in the first period. The goal was assisted by Brendan McLaughlin and Peter Magagna. Ryan Ellis scored later in the first period to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead, as Francois Gagnon and Rick Varone assisted.
The Lakers extended their lead as Matt Whitehead scored on a pretty breakaway deke early in the second period.
Each team scored once in the third period as Barry McLaughlin scored for Cortland, his 23rd goal of the year, and Peter Magagna scored for the Lakers.
Cortland goalie Ben Binga made 42 saves while Ryan Scott made 12 saves for the Lakers.
Oswego State will host a SUNYAC semifinal playoff game Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Ice Arena against an opponent to be determined.
Oswego State students, and Laker season-ticket holders can purchase tickets in advance, on Monday and Tuesday at the Laker Hall Box Office. Tickets will go on sale to the general public Wednesday, also at the Laker Hall Box Office.
