The Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated Norwich 3-0 on Saturday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena in an NCAA Quarterfinal game. The Lakers advance to the NCAA Division III Frozen Four in Superior, Wisc. and will play St. Norbert in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Neil Musselwhite, Brendan McLaughlin, and Peter Magagna scored for the Lakers and Ryan Scott had the shutout with 24 saves.
Musselwhite opened the scoring just 1:50 into the first period when he rolled out of the right-wing corner and fired a shot over the shoulder of Norwich goaltender David Thompson.
The Lakers added two more goals before the first period ended, both of which came on the power play. McLaughlin fired in a shot that caught a bit of the short-side goalpost before hitting the back of the net while Oswego State was on a 5-on-3 advantage. That goal, his team-leading 24th of the year, came with 9:02 remaining in the period.
Peter Magagna scored a power-play goal with 4:35 remaining in the first period to round out the scoring in the game.
The Lakers maintained their lead over 60 minutes due to an excellent effort from junior goalie Ryan Scott, efficient penalty killing, and a strong overall defensive performance that limited Norwich's effectiveness by deflecting passes and shot attempts.
The shutout was Scott's third of the season and sixth of his career. It was the second-ever shutout by a Laker goalie in the NCAA Tournament. The last was in the 2003 semifinals by Tyson Gajda, in a 6-0 win over Middlebury.
