Big save; Quick goals lead Lakers to road victory

Oswego State senior goalie Ryan Scott played his best game of the season, including stopping a penalty shot to keep the game tied in the second period, and the Laker men's ice hockey team went on to a 5-1 win over Hamilton College on Tuesday night at Sage Rink in Clinton.

The Lakers earned their 10th win of the season, improving to 10-4-2 on the year, while Hamilton fell to 1-6-1 overall.

Oswego State took an early lead as Ryan Ellis scored just 22 seconds into the game on an assist from Mark Lozzi, but Hamilton tied the score with 5:04 left in the first period as Marc Trostle scored on a rebound of a shot by Sam Cowan. It was the only time all night that Ryan Scott was beaten, as he went on to record 30 saves and earn the victory.

Scott's most important save came with 13:46 left in the second period when an Oswego State defender tripped Hamilton's Jake Davis, who was in on a breakaway. A penalty shot was awarded to Davis, who attempted to deke Scott, but the Laker goalie closed his pads and denied the effort to keep the score tied 1-1.

The Lakers scored a pair of goals in a span of 65 seconds to build a 3-1 lead late in the second. Ellis scored his second of the game on a nice cross-ice feed from Brendan McLaughlin, and Tony DiNunzio scored on a rebound after Derrell Levy's initial shot.

Two more goals, these separated by just 32 seconds, early in the third period gave Oswego State a commanding 5-1 lead that held up through the rest of the game. DiNunzio scored his second of the night and third of the season on a rising slapper over the shoulder of Hamilton goalie Ian Stearns. Brad Dormiedy followed that up with a low shot, assisted by Neil Musselwhite and Garren Reisweber. Dormiedy's goal chased Stearns (16 saves) and Scott Hefferman made eight saves in the last 16 minutes.

The victory extended Oswego State's unbeaten streak against the Continentals to eight games (7-0-1) dating back to the 2000-01 season.

Oswego State returns to action in two weeks, when they host Morrisville in a non-league contest at the Campus Center Ice Arena on Jan. 22.
