In a game that saw a combined 19 penalties called for 65 minutes against both teams, the Oswego State men's ice hockey team could not hold on to a one-goal advantage after the first period, allowing host Elmira College to score the tying and winning goals on the power play in the second half en route to a 3-2 loss to the Soaring Eagles in the season opener for the Lakers at the Murray Athletic Center in Elmira.
All three Elmira goals came on the power play as Oswego State (0-1-0) collected 12 penalties for 40 minutes, which included a pair of ten minute game disqualifications late in the second period. The Soaring Eagles (2-0-0) committed seven penalties for 25 minutes, the most severe coming on a 10-minute game misconduct in the closing seconds of the first period.
Elmira forward Karl Linden had a hand in all of the Elmira scoring, scoring twice and adding an assist. He scoring the opening goal of the game 3:20 into the period after Oswego State was called for hooking.
The Lakers responded with back-to-back goals in a 3:13 span as rookie forward Erik Sellek scored his first collegiate goal at the 15:11 mark, with sophomore Josh Chamberlain and senior captain Peter Magagna getting assists. Senior forward Ryan Ellis gave Oswego State its first and only lead at 18:24 with an unassisted goal.
It was after Ellis' score that things would begin to turn ugly. The final 19 seconds of the period saw senior Derrell Levy of Oswego State and Elmira's Brock Sawyer both get two-minute minors for roughing. Sawyer got tagged additional five minutes for checking from behind and saw his evening come to a close with a 10-minute game misconduct.
The Soaring Eagles tied the score in the opening minutes of the second period when Darcy Vaillancourt put a pass from Linden past Laker goalkeeper Chris Hyk at 6:31. After the Lakers were called for tripping at 10:23, Linden scored the eventual game winner, his second tally of the game 53 seconds into the penalty.
The final 8:25 of the period saw the Lakers called for five penalties. The most severe came at the 15:56 mark when Laker junior forward Neil Musselwhite and Elmira's Rusty Masters received two-minute minors for roughing. With additional activity between both teams in the sequence, senior defenseman Francois Gagnon and sophomore forward Chris Laganiere were each handed ten-minute game disqualification penalties, which not only saw their evening come to an end, but will have both sitting out the Lakers' next game against Lebanon Valley College on Friday, Oct. 24 at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

Oswego held an 11-2 shots advantage in the third quarter with several chances to even the score, but could not break through Soaring Eagles goalie Casey Tuttle, who turned away 29 shots for the game. The Lakers had one last opportunity to even the score as Elmira was called for tripping with 1:02 remaining. With Hyk pulled for the extra attacker, Tuttle and the Soaring Eagle defense held firm in turning away each attempt in the final seconds. Hyk finished with 22 saves.
