Senior forwards
Brendan McLaughlin (Brampton, ONT) and
Ryan Ellis (Georgetown, ONT), along with freshman
Eric Selleck (Shanley, ONT), each registered a goal and an assist, but visiting Morrisville State scored the game-tying goal on the extra-man advantage with one second left in regulation to force a 5-5 overtime draw over the third-ranked Lakers in a SUNYAC contest at the Campus Center Ice Arena on Friday, November 15.
The tie snapped a six-game season opening losing streak for the Mustangs (0-6-1, 0-4-1 SUNYAC), while ending a five-game win streak for Oswego (5-1-1, 3-0-1 SUNYAC).
Oswego jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals from Selleck at 8:27 and Ellis at 10:39, before Morrisville scored its first goal of the period on an unassisted score from junior Andrew Allaire at 11:20. The Mustangs got a pair of second period power-play goals from junior Kylele Roberts and freshman Geoff Matzel to take a 3-2 lead 13:34 into the period before Junior Neil Musselwhite (Burlington, ONT) scored unassisted on a 3-on-2 break with 19 seconds remaining to even the score.
The Lakers retook the lead, 4-3, at 2:49 into the third period when junior Mark Lozzi (Richmond Hill, ONT) circled around the net and found senior Garren Reisweber (Williamsville, NY) in front for the score, but the Mustangs tied the score again as Keith Williams scored after an Oswego penalty expired at the 10:56 mark. Oswego, which called a timeout at the 14:08 mark, took its last lead of the game 16 seconds later as McLaughlin slapped a shot to the top corner of the goal on passes from Selleck and Tyler Lyon (Foxboro, ONT).
Morrisville used its timeout with 46 seconds remaining in the period to set up its final strategy, pulling goalkeeper Caylin Relkoff for the final 37 seconds for the extra attacker. Rob Sgarbossa tipped in the initial shot from junior defenseman Evan Kernohan with one second left on the clock to send the game into overtime.
The Lakers outshot Morrisville in the extra session, 8-2, but Relkoff stopped all eight attempts in preserving the tie. He finished with 31 saves in 64:23 of action. Laker goalie Chris Hyk (Hamilton, ONT) stopped 28 shots, two coming in overtime.
