The Oswego State men's ice hockey team scored three power play goals en route to a 5-4 win over Geneseo on Friday at the Campus Center Ice Arena.
The Lakers carried a 4-0 lead into the third period and had to hold on for a one-goal victory. Oswego State is now 13-5-2 overall and 9-2-1 in the SUNY Athletic Conference while Geneseo fell to 6-14-0 and 5-7-0 in the conference.
Oswego State opened the scoring on a goal by Rich Zalewski in the first period, assisted by Peter Magagna and Ryan Ellis. Matt Whitehead scored a power-play goal with 2:49 left in the first period for the Lakers, assisted by Tony DiNunzio and Zalewski.
The Lakers took advantage of a five-minute major called against a Geneseo player for checking from behind and scored twice on the power play. Brendan McLaughlin tapped in a shot from close range with 5:54 left in the period and Zalewski added his second goal of the night on a point shot that went in off the goalpost.
Geneseo came out with the better energy in the third period and scored two quick goals to get back into the game. Dave Schroeder scored his first of the year and Brendon French tallied two minutes later, making the score 4-2 and forcing Oswego State to use its timeout.
Dan Sullivan scored from behind the net with 10:53 left to make the score 4-3.
Oswego State re-established its two-goal lead as Tyler Lyon converted a pass from Ellis on a 2-on-1 rush with 6:17 left to play.
A power-play tally by Trent Cassan with 3:02 left got Geneseo back to within one and Laker goalie Ryan Scott made a big save on a partial breakaway by Geneseo's Mathieu Cyr in the closing minutes to maintain the advantage.
Ryan Scott made 18 saves in the game, while Geneseo's Derek Jokic made 27 saves for the Ice Knights.
