Box Score

The Oswego State men's hockey team received goals from four different players as the Lakers defeated Buffalo State 4-1 to open SUNYAC play on Friday night in Buffalo. Defenseman Stephen Mallaro (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) and forward Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.) led the way with a goal and an assist each, while seven other skaters recorded points during the game. Oswego State moved to 2-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference. The Bengals dropped to 0-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the league.

The first 15 minutes of the contest were quiet offensively as neither team was able to take advantage of a power play chance.  However, the Lakers closed out the period strong with a pair of goals to skate into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.  The first goal came at the 15:55 mark when Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) and Stephen Mallaro assisted Eric Selleck for his second goal of the year.  The eventual game-winning goal came off of the stick of Mallaro with 1:18 remaining in the period.  Assists were credited to Brad Dormiedy (Sr., Ajax, Ont.) and Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) on the play.

Oswego State carried the momentum it gained at the end of the first period into the second.  Luke Moodie (Fr., Burlington, Ont.) pushed the Laker lead to three goals with 3:23 elapsed in the frame, as Paul Rodrigues (Fr., Etobicoke, Ont.) and Hank VanBoxmeer (So., Orange, Calif.) were awarded assists.  Nearly two minutes later, the margin increased to 4-0 when Michael Gilchrist (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) tallied his first collegiate goal after receiving a pass from Selleck.

Buffalo State got on the board at 16:07 in the second as Nick Petriello recorded his second goal of the year to cut the deficit to 4-1, but that would be as close as the Bengals would get for the remainder of the game.

Oswego State sophomore goaltender Paul Beckwith (Cleveland, Ohio) registered 25 saves on 26 shots to improve to 2-1-0 on the season, while Buffalo State goalie Alan Fritch stopped 34 shots and allowed four goals as he dropped to 0-2-1.

The Lakers travel to Fredonia on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. face-off.
