The Oswego State men's hockey team trailed 3-2 heading into the final period, but exploded for five goals as it defeated Fredonia 7-4 on Saturday night in Fredonia. The line of
Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y.),
Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.), and
Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) had another solid night as the three players combined for 13 points on four goals and nine assists. The Lakers improved to 3-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference, while the Blue Devils fell to 2-2-0 overall and 0-2-0 in SUNYAC play.
Justin Fox started the scoring 4:42 into the game with an assist going to Stephen Mallaro (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.). After the ensuing face-off, the line stuck again with a goal from Chris Laganiere. Eric Selleck and Fox were credited with the assists. However, Fredonia evened the score with a pair of goals from Alex Morton before the end of the period.
The Blue Devils grabbed the lead at 4:15 in the second after a goal from Nick Stimson for the only score of the period, as Fredonia held a 3-2 advantage going into the final frame.
Laganiere recorded his second goal of the game with 11:44 remaining on the clock after receiving a pass from Selleck and Fox to knot the score at 3-3. The tie did not last long as four minutes later James Muscatello netted a power play goal for Fredonia. However, it would be the last score of the game for the Blue Devils.
Captain Tyler Lyon (Sr., Foxboro, Ont.) recorded his first goal of the season at the 14:25 mark to start the Laker offensive rush. Selleck and Laganiere received the assists. Twenty seconds later, Kevin Huinink (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) posted the game-winning goal after receiving a pass from Laganiere and Selleck. Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) and Selleck tacked on two more goals in the final two minutes to clinch the victory for Oswego State.
Laker goalie Paul Beckwith (So., Cleveland, Ohio) registered 23 saves and allowed four goals, while Fredonia goaltender Pat Street stopped 44 of the 51 shots he faced.
Oswego State will travel to Potsdam on Friday to face the Bears at 7 p.m. followed by a contest at Plattsburgh on Saturday at 7 p.m.
