The Oswego State women's hockey team started the 2009-10 season with an offensive outburst as it defeated non-conference Castleton State 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Center Arena in Oswego.
Jenna Kirkwood and
Bryanna Forrest recorded two goals each as the Lakers have yet to be defeated by the Spartans in their three previous meetings. Oswego State starts the season at 1-0-0, while Castleton State falls to 0-2-0.
The majority of the first period was flowing up and down the ice as the squads gained a feel for each other. Oswego State got on the scoreboard at the 16:11 mark as the Lakers just killed a tripping penalty. Junior
Emily Grippin (Ithaca, N.Y.) threw the puck on the net as Spartan netminder Amanda Hoy (Jr., Brockport, N.Y.) made the save. However, Grippin's linemate,
Sarah Hannon (Jr., Lackawanna, N.Y.), crashed the net to pound in the rebound.
Oswego State came out strong in the second period, resulting in four goals during the frame. Assistant captain
Jenna Kirkwood (Sr., Chilliwack, B.C.) started the offensive frenzy at 6:15 when she took advantage of a rebound given up by Hoy after Grippin took the initial shot on goal. Hannon was also credited with an assist. One minute later freshman
Bryanna Forrest (Anchorage, Alaska) tallied her first collegiate goal after receiving a pass from classmate
Kristin Metzger (Lee Center, N.Y.). The final two goals of the period for the Lakers came from
Jillian Bergeron (So., Brockville, Ont.) at 10:13 and Kirkwood, who snapped a wrist shot into the top left corner of the net, at 17:28. Oswego State went into the second intermission with a 5-0 lead.
Castleton State got on the board in the third period as it took advantage of a Laker interference penalty. Kaitlin Hayes took a slap shot from the blue line, but it was deflected by Jade Werger sending the puck between Oswego State goaltender Emi Williams' (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) legs into the back of the net at 9:34.
The Lakers answered right back as
Kathryn Sbrocchi (So., Mississauga, Ont.) took a wrist shot from the right side of the blue line into traffic in front of the net. However, Forrest was able to deflect the puck through the five-hole of Castleton State goalie Katharyn Dembowski, who replaced Hoy at the start of the third period.
Emi Williams recorded 20 saves on 21 shots on goal for Oswego State. Amanda Hoy tallied 24 saves and five goals allowed in the first two periods, while Katharyn Dembowski posted six saves and one goal allowed.
The six goals scored by the Lakers was the highest game total since Feb. 22, 2007 when Oswego State defeated Castleton State 6-3.
Oswego State begins ECAC West competition next weekend as it travels to Potsdam on November 7 and 8 for 3 p.m. games.
