Laker rally in closing minutes comes up short in 9-8 season-opening loss to St. John Fisher

Senior midfielder Mike Recor (Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) tallied a game-tying three goals with an assists, while classmate Mike Brewster (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) added a pair of goals to pace Oswego State, but host St. John Fisher overcame a slow start in the first half with five goals in the third quarter, while fending off a late rally in the game's closing minutes en-route to a 9-8 in a non-league contest on Thursday, Feb. 5 at Growney Stadium.

Both teams tallied 34 shots for the game (20 on goal for Fisher, 19 for Oswego), with Laker sophomore Judd Robinson (Guilderland) and Fisher's Jon Cortina each making 11 saves in goal for their respective teams, but the Cardinals won 13 of 21 faceoffs and tallied 44 ground balls, while Oswego won eight of 21 faceoffs with 34 ground balls.

Oswego held a 3-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter on goals by Junior Dan Scarazzo (Fairport), Brewster, and freshman Britt Leone (Schenectady) before Fisher tied the game up on back-to-back goals 30 seconds apart from Chris Schmidt (7:12 and 6:50), who tallied the Cardinals' first goal in the opening quarter. Recor scored unassisted with 3:01 left in the quarter to give the Lakers a 4-3 lead going into the half.

Fisher tied the score 4-4 to open the third quarter on a goal from Jeff Price at the 1:42 mark and took its first lead of the game at the 7:20 mark on a man-up goal by Scott Bowen. Oswego would tie the score less than a minute later as Recor would assist on a goal by sophomore Pat Decker (Spencerport), but the Cardinals would take the lead for good on goals by Bowen (5:27 remaining) and Ryan Schmidt (2:30 remaining).

The Lakers outscored Fisher, 2-1 in the final quarter as Recor scored on the man-up advantage one minute into the quarter, and tallied the hat trick with 2:20 to play in the game. Both of his goals pulled Oswego to within a goal, but the Cardinals sandwiched a goal in between as Ryan Schmidt registered the eventual game winner unassisted at the 2:09 mark in the quarter. Oswego had two opportunities to tie the score, but Brewster's shot with 1:16 to play was saved, while the second from Leone 16 seconds later hit the post.

Oswego will take to the road for a pair of games downstate, facing SUNY Maritime on Saturday, March. 7 at 1 p.m. and taking on Farmingdale State on Tuesday, March 10 at 3 p.m. before returning to Laker Field on Friday, March 13 to face Nazareth College in the home opener at 4:00 p.m.
