Lakers rally to defeat Plattsburgh in overtime, 11-10, securing SUNYAC playoff berth

Senior midfielder Mike Recor (Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) tallied the game-tying tying goal with two seconds remaining in regulation, while sophomore attack Cam Davoy (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored the game winner on a man-up opportunity 2:19 into overtime as Oswego State rallied from a five-goal deficit after three quarters en route to an 11-10 victory over Plattsburgh State on Saturday, April 18 on Laker Field.

The victory secures the Lakers (7-7, 3-1 SUNYAC) a berth in the four-team SUNYAC playoffs for only first time since 2006 and the second time in the program's history since the conference reinstated men's lacrosse as a championship sport in 2000.

Recor led all scorers with three goals, while senior Derek Card (Syracuse/Henninger) and junior Dan Scarazzo (Fairport) netted two goals each for Oswego, who outscored Plattsburgh (7-7, 2-3 SUNYAC) 5-1 In the fourth quarter. Senior Mike Brewster (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa), who assisted on the game winning goal, was one of four players to score a goal, joining Davoy, senior Nick DeFeo (Great River/East Islip), and junior Ryan White (Rockville Center/Southside).

Junior goalkeeper Judd Robinson (Guilderland) made a career game-high 29 saves in registering the complete-game victory.
Both teams played to a stalemate in the first (2-2) and second (4-4) quarters before the Cardinals (7-7, 2-3 SUNYAC) got a pair of goals from senior Matt Maes (Lindenhurst) and sophomore Kyle Norchi (Hauppauge) as part of a 5-1 third quarter to take a 9-6 lead.

The fourth quarter was the exact opposite of the previous quarter, as Oswego opened with back-to-back man-up goals from Brewster and Card to cut the Plattsburgh lead to 9-7 2:59 into the quarter. Plattsburgh scored to push its lead up to 10-7, before the Lakers scored the next three goals, with Recor scoring twice in the run and White adding a score.

Plattsburgh won the faceoff to open overtime and had an opportunity to win the game on a man-up advantage as Oswego was called for slashing 1:04 into the extra session. The Cardinals failed to capitalize and turned the ball over 17 seconds later. Oswego went on offense and had the man-up opportunity when Plattsburgh was called for a one-minute penalty for unnecessary roughness at the 2:03 mark, setting up the winning goal.

Both teams were called for a combined 24 penalties, with Plattsburgh being called 13 times for eleven minutes and Oswego 11 times for ten minutes.  The Lakers were 4-for-15 on the man-up advantage (3-for-5 in the fourth quarter and overtime), while the Cardinals converted 1-of-11 chances.

The Lakers close out their regular-season schedule with a pair of home conference games, hosting league-leading Geneseo on Wednesday, April 22 at 4 p.m., then finishing with Oneonta State on Saturday, April 25 at 2:30 p.m. in the second game of a men's/women's doubleheader.
