Box Score
Two weeks off did not slow down the No. 1-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team as it defeated Buffalo State 10-1 at the Campus Center Arena in Oswego on Friday night.
Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.) led the Laker attack with five points on two goals and three assists. Linemate
Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y.) also contributed two goals, and was one of eight different Oswego State skaters to tally goals.
The scoring started early as D'Arcy Thomas gave Buffalo State a 1-0 lead 1:09 into the first period. However, that lead did not last long, as Hank Van Boxmeer (So., Orange, Calif.) tallied his first goal of the season unassisted at the 5:27 mark to get the Oswego State offense rolling.
The Lakers tacked on three more goals, including two on the power play, in the stanza with two scored by Laganiere and one tallied by captain Tyler Lyon (Sr., Foxboro, Ont.) to give them a 4-1 lead at the first intermission.
Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) recorded his 14th goal of the season at 5:22 in the second frame just nine seconds after an Oswego State penalty. Freshman Matt Singleton (Brooklin, Ont.) later made the score 6-1 when he received a pass from Andrew Mather (So., Ottawa, Ont.) in open ice. Singleton skated in on Bengal goaltender Mike Mesaros before ripping a wrist shot into the left portion of the net for his first collegiate goal.
In the first nine minutes of the third period, the Lakers scored four more goals for the final score of 10-1. The Oswego State power play unit was effective during the game as it converted 3-of-7 opportunities, while the penalty kill unit killed all five chances and has yet to allow a power play goal in 2010 (26-for-26).
Paul Beckwith (So., Cleveland, Ohio) picked up the win after making 14 saves and allowing one goal to improve to 6-1-0. Alan Fritch suffered the loss for Buffalo State as he stopped 18 of the 22 shots he faced in the first period. Mesaros made 21 saves on 27 shots in the final two frames.
The Lakers, who improved to 17-1-0 on the season and 9-0-0 in the SUNYAC, out-shot the Bengals 49-15. Buffalo State dropped to 6-11-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the league.
