Box Score

Kelly Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) scored her sixth goal of the season with 42 seconds remaining to cap a third-period comeback for the Oswego State women's ice hockey team that resulted in a 2-2 tie with host Cortland on Saturday. The Lakers trailed 2-0 heading into the third period, but received goals from Jenna Kirkwood (Sr., Chilliwack, B.C.) and Collins to send the game into overtime. Each team skated away with a point in the tight ECAC West standings.

Oswego State moved to 5-11-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the league despite out-shooting the Red Dragons 34-16, while Cortland moved to 4-12-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the conference.

Danielle Scharf put the Red Dragons on the scoreboard when she pounced on a rebound with a shot that went into the top-right corner of the net.  The power-play goal came at 12:42 in the first period for the only goal of the frame.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead at the 2:06 mark in the second when a Laker turnover at neutral ice led to a goal by Chelsey Wright, who got the puck past Oswego State goaltender Emi Williams (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska).  A Red Dragon penalty minutes later gave the Lakers an opportunity to cut into the deficit.  Head coach Diane Dillon's squad peppered Cortland goaltender Sarah Sitcov with the skater-advantage, including a shot that clanged off the inside of a pipe, but came up empty.  The power play served as an energy boost for Oswego State as it controlled play for the duration of the period, out-shooting the Red Dragons 16-3 in the stanza, but was unable to put the puck in the net.

Jenna Kirkwood ended the shutout bid at 2:11 in the third period when she ripped a shot from the right slot after receiving a pass from Emily Grippin (Jr., Ithaca, N.Y.) to pull the Lakers to within one at 2-1.  With 47 seconds left to play, Coach Dillon called a timeout and pulled Williams for the extra attacker with a face-off coming up in the Cortland end.  The timeout worked as Collins tallied her goal five seconds later.  Angie Friesen (Sr., Chilliwack, B.C.) and Jillian Bergeron (So., Brockville, N.Y.) were credited with assists on the play.

Both squads had scoring chances in overtime, but neither was able to net the game-winner for the 2-2 result.

Emi Williams finished the game with 14 saves for Oswego State, while Sarah Sitcov posted 32 saves.  The teams wrap up their weekend series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
