Jon Whitelaw and Justin Fox registered goals just over one minute apart late in the third period to turn a slim one-goal lead into a 4-1 victory for the Oswego State men's ice hockey team over Elmira Friday night in Oswego.  Both Laker goals were scored with under five minutes to play as a result of a five-minute major penalty whistled against the Soaring Eagles.  Oswego State, which is 1-0-0, and Elmira, which is 0-1-0, wrap up the home-and-home series tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Elmira.

The scoring started early for the home team as assistant captain Chris Laganiere got the puck past Soaring Eagle goaltender Darren McDonald 2:25 into the contest with fellow assistant captain Stephen Mallaro earning the assist on the power-play goal.  Elmira had three power-play chances during the first stanza, but the Laker penalty kill unit effectively killed each opportunity to give Oswego State a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

Head coach Ed Gosek's troop came out strong in the second period when Luke Moodie and Jon Whitelaw connected with Paul Rodrigues less than two minutes into the frame to put the Lakers ahead 2-0.  However, it did not take the Soaring Eagles to get into the scoring column as Wes Consorti cut the deficit in half after receiving a pass from the sticks of Kevin Willer and Darcy Vaillancourt at the 3:40 mark.  The goal energized the visiting team as it went onto outshot Oswego State 12-6, but Laker goalie Paul Beckwith maintained the one-goal lead after the horn for the period sounded.

The score stood at 2-1 until Elmira was called for contact to the head resulting in a five-minute major penalty at 13:19.  The Lakers took advantage of the opportunity with goals from Whitelaw and Fox to gain a comfortable lead, as they skated to a 4-1 victory.

Paul Beckwith finished the contest with 24 saves, while his counterpart, Darren McDonald also posted 24 saves.  Special teams played a critical role in the win as Oswego State went 3-for-11 with the extra attacker compared to the Soaring Eagles going 0-for-7.
