Three of the four goals scored by the Oswego State men's hockey team were scored by new members as it completed the weekend sweep of Elmira with a 4-2 win at Elmira on Saturday night. The win improves the Lakers to 2-0-0 in the young season. The Soaring Eagles fall to 0-2-0.
Elmira struck first when junior Darcy Vaillancourt beat Laker goaltender
Paul Beckwith 3:42 into the contest. Tyler Campbell and Matthew Herskovitz were credited with assists on the goal. Vaillancourt led the Soaring Eagles in scoring last season with 40 points on 20 goals and 20 assists.
Oswego State answered back two minutes later when freshman
David Titanic scored his first collegiate goal on a pass from
Andrew Mather. The third goal of the period was scored at 11:00 when an Elmira penalty opened up the ice for the Lakers. Senior
Chris Laganiere found the back of the net to give Oswego State a 2-1 lead. Mather tallied his second assist of the night, while senior
Justin Fox was also credited with an assist.
A Laker penalty later in the stanza cost the team its lead, as about a minute into the power play, Karl Linden knotted the game up with a marker at 15:15 in the first period. Kevin Willer and Manuel Kourtoglou assisted on the game-tying goal.
The second period was a rather quiet one, as neither team broke the tie. Oswego State outshot Elmira 12-9 in the stanza and stayed out of the penalty box for the entire period.
Dan Bremner put Oswego State ahead for good by scoring his first goal as a Laker in the last minute of the period. Laganiere and
Jesse McConney assisted on the eventual game-winner.
Oswego State took its one-goal lead into the third period, but it did not take long for it to add an insurance goal. Just 15 seconds into the stanza, junior transfer
Ian Boots became the third skater of the night to score his first goal as a Laker when he beat Soaring Eagle netminder Kevin Bolin. Laganiere tallied an assist for his third point of the contest. Fox was also credited with an assist on the play.
Oswego State outshot its opponent 36-30 in the two-goal victory to complete the home-and-home series sweep. Beckwith finished the game with 28 saves for Oswego State. Bolin registered 32 saves in the contest.
Oswego State will return home on Friday to skate against Buffalo State in its first SUNYAC contest at 7 p.m.
