The Oswego State women's ice hockey team held a two-goal lead with one period remaining, but Cortland battled back to tie the game on a pair of power-play goals as the squads finished in a 2-2 tie on Saturday. For the second consecutive night, the Lakers outshot their opponents, 36-16, as Oswego State moved to 1-2-3 on the season and 0-1-3 in the league, while the Red Dragons moved to 0-3-2 overall and 0-2-2 in the ECAC West.
After an Oswego State hooking penalty,
Mackenzie Lee was able to sneak behind the Red Dragon defense as
Meagan Big Snake was able to hit Lee with the pass. Lee skated in on goaltender Katie Double, ripped a shot just below her glove for the short-handed goal, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead at 14:35 in the first period. Cortland had a small series of chances late in the frame, but the score stood at 1-0 heading into the break.
With two minutes the second period, Oswego State tallied another special teams' goal, but on the power play following a Red Dragon roughing penalty.
Megan Howe recorded her first collegiate goal after receiving a pass from
Melissa Seamont and
Jocelyn St. Clair to double the Laker lead before the end of the frame.
Cortland came out of the break with increased intensity resulting in a pair of power play goals scored by Ashley Meyer at 1:58 and Gina Tomei at 9:35. The Red Dragons gained a two-player advantage with four minutes remaining, but the Oswego State penalty kill unit successfully fought off both penalties as the game went into sudden-death overtime.
With ten seconds remaining in the overtime, the Lakers thought they had tallied the game-winning goal, but the shot gleaned off the underside of the crossbar and it was ruled no goal by the officials.
Oswego State goaltender
Catherine Cote posted 14 saves, including eight in the third period, in her first collegiate start. Cortland goalie Katie Double ended the game with 34 saves, including 14 in the second stanza.
The Lakers return to the Campus Center Arena for a two-game set against conference foe Utica on Friday and Saturday with 7 p.m. starts.
