Third-ranked Elmira used four power-play goals to defeat the Oswego State women's hockey 5-2 on Saturday night in Elmira. The Lakers owned a 1-0 advantage after the first intermission before the Soaring Eagles grabbed the lead for good courtesy of two second-period goals. Junior goaltender
Emi Williams (Anchorage, Alaska) kept Oswego State in the game making 48 saves, including 26 in the second period. The Lakers dropped to 7-14-1 overall and 5-9-1 in the ECAC West standings, while Elmira moved to 17-4-1 overall and 12-2-1 in the league.
Sophomore Kelly Collins (Fairport, N.Y.) gave Oswego State an early 1-0 lead when she tallied her ninth goal of the year at 3:25 in the first period, which was where the score remained at the first intermission.
Elmira got on the scoreboard midway through the second frame when Jillayne DeBus scored on the Soaring Eagles' first power play chance of the game at the 11:20 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Caitlin Metcalf later gave Elmira a 2-1 edge with 2:45 remaining in the period. Laker goaltender Emi Williams (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) did everything but stand on her head to keep it a one-goal game, as she stopped 26 of the 28 shots she faced in the period alone.
Early in the third, DeBus tacked on her second goal of the game to put the Soaring Eagles ahead by two goals. Oswego State responded five minutes later when Kathryn Sbrocchi (So., Mississauga, Ont.) found the back of the net after receiving a feed from Jillian Bergeron (So., Brockville, Ont.) while on a power play. The Lakers' penalty kill unit kept the Elmira power play relatively at bay until the Soaring Eagles scored two power play goals in a 1:38 span following consecutive Oswego State penalties to make the score 5-2 with nine minutes to play.
The Lakers had two power play opportunities later in the game, but were unable to take advantage of the extra skater as Elmira posted the 5-2 win. Samantha Maguire posted 20 saves on 22 shots between the pipes for the Soaring Eagles.
The squads will finish the two-game set on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Elmira.
