The Oswego State women's ice hockey team was unable to control the power play unit of third-ranked Elmira, as the Soaring Eagles scored five power play goals en route to a 9-0 victory over the Lakers on Sunday in Elmira. Jamie Kivi paced the Soaring Eagles with seven points on two goals and five assists, and was one of seven skaters to record goals. Oswego State fell to 7-15-1 overall and 5-9-1 in the ECAC West, while Elmira raised its overall mark to 18-4-1 and conference mark to 13-2-1.
Melanie Henshaw started the scoring for the Soaring Eagles on the power play at 12:06 in the first period after receiving a feed from Kivi. Kivi also assisted the next two goals in the stanza, as Elmira took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
The momentum carried over to the start of the second when Kivi scored her first goal of the game at the 1:31 mark unassisted. The Lakers had two power play chances before the midway point in the period, but came up empty in the effort to cut into the deficit. Oswego State was whistled for two penalties with 4:29 remaining in the period resulting in Kivi's second goal four seconds later to put the Soaring Eagles ahead 5-0 at the end of two.
Elmira added four more goals in the third period, two of which came with the extra attacker, to cruise to the 9-0 victory. Laker netminder Emi Williams (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) suffered the loss after stopping 30 shots and allowing seven goals in 48:47. Lana Peterson (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska) recorded four saves on six shots in the final 11:13. Lauren Sullivan picked up the shutout with 16 saves for the Golden Eagles
The Lakers continue to fight for a post-season bid in the final series of the regular season at the Campus Center Arena against Plattsburgh starting on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. The contest is also “Pink the Rink” night for the squad, which will be donning pink jerseys and laces to raise awareness for cancer. For this special occasion, there will be no admission charged for this one night only, and ask spectators make a donation to the American Cancer Society.
