The Oswego State women's ice hockey team avenged Friday night's loss to Neumann by defeating the Knights, 3-1, Saturday in Aston, Pa.
Carly Henderson recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Lakers, who defeated Neumann for the first time in program history. Oswego State, which moved to 7-5-3 overall and 3-4-3 in the conference, will host Chatham next Saturday in Oswego. The loss dropped the Knights' overall mark to 8-5-2 and their league mark to 5-5-0.
With a scoreless contest after one period, the Lakers lit the lamp first midway through the second period when
Jillian Bergeron received a feed from Henderson and
Brenna Weber with two seconds remaining on a Neumann body checking penalty. On the ensuing shift, Oswego State doubled its lead after
Emily Grippin scored her second goal of the season at the 10:33 mark with assists going to
Mady Paul and
Leslie Jarvis. The Knights cut the deficit in half before the end of the frame when Diane Peters made it a 2-1 contest at 14:54.
Both squads came out aggressively in the third period with each team being assessed penalties in the first two minutes, but the Lakers capitalized on their fifth power play of the contest when Henderson added an insurance goal at 2:43.
Melissa Seamont earned an assist on the play. Oswego State had a 5-on-3 opportunity for 1:41 halfway through the period, but were unable to convert. However, the Lakers would hang on for the win as the defense forced the Neumann power-play unit to go 0-for-5 in the game.
