Box Score

The No. 2 Oswego State men's ice hockey team responded to last week's loss in a big way by defeating SUNYAC contender and 12th-ranked Geneseo, 4-2, Friday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena.  Senior Andrew Mather (Ottawa, Ont.) had a strong night with two goals to help the Lakers move to 4-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the league, while the Blue Knights suffered their first conference loss to drop to 2-1-0 and 2-2-0 overall.

Oswego State got the scoring started when Jon Whitelaw (Jr., Huntsville, Ont.) one-timed a pass from classmate Luke Moodie (Jr., Oakville, Ont.) just between the pad and blocker of Geneseo's Adrian Rubeniuk for the game's first goal at 12:20 in the first period.  David Titanic (So., Markham, Ont.) also was credited with an assist on the play.  A Laker turnover at the Geneseo blue line caused by Corbin Rosmarin allowed the Blue Knights to level the score at one goal apiece when Zachary Vit wristed a shot through the five hole of Oswego State's Andrew Hare (Jr., Burlington, Ont.) at 13:34.

The Lakers regained the lead at 16:13 with six seconds remaining in a 4-on-4 situation.  Freshman Bobby Gertsakis (Pickering, Ont.) ripped a shot from the left point that was initially stopped by Rubeniuk.  However, Andrew Mather gained control of the bouncing puck long enough to bury it in the open net with Whitelaw receiving an assist as well to give Oswego State a 2-1 lead at the break.

The Lakers kept the momentum rolling in the second period.  Ian Boots (Sr., Akwesasne, N.Y.) hit Mather coming out of the penalty box with a pass leading to his second goal of the game. Mather skated in unabated on Rubeniuk, and lifted the puck over Rubeniuk's blocker 1:01 into the frame.  Vit responded shortly after with his second goal of the game at 6:14 on an odd-man rush, ripping a shot into the top right corner of the net after receiving a pass from Rosmarin. 

Both squads went back and forth throughout the remainder of the second period and into the third period until the 12:41 mark when Chris Ayotte (Jr., Cornwall, Ont.) kicked a pass near the Oswego State bench to Chris Muise (Jr., Oakville, Ont.), who was skating up the right side with Matt Singleton (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) on an odd-man rush.  Muise carried the puck long enough to draw the defenseman before sliding the puck to Singleton, who tapped the puck into the open net, to give the Lakers a two-goal cushion at 4-2, which was the final score.

Both squads struggled on the power play, as Oswego State went 0-for-5 with the extra attacker and Geneseo went 0-for-3.  Andrew Hare finished the game with 20 saves, while Rubeniuk ended the night with 46 stops in the losing effort.

The Lakers continue their homestand with a conference against Brockport on Saturday night at 7 p.m.  Geneseo will travel to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons at the same time.
