Men's Ice Hockey Takes Heartbreaking Loss in Home Opener

BOX SCORE

Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's ice hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to visiting Fredonia State on Friday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena. It was the home, season and SUNYAC opener for the Lakers that played in front of 2,831 fans.

It is the first season-opening loss for Oswego since the 2008-09 season when it fell 3-2 on the road at Elmira College. The loss is also the first home-opening loss in the Campus Center Ice Arena since the 2007-08 season when the Soaring Eagles defeated Oswego 3-2.

With just 28 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Fredonia's Hunter Long scored top right off a pass from Matt Owczarczak. The two teammates assisted on the Blue Devils' first goal of the night.

Fredonia opened the third stanza with a power-play goal that knotted the contest at 2-2 with 15:52 remaining in the game. Chad Bennett netted the score right in front of the Oswego crease, stuffing it past the Lakers' netminder.

Oswego's Alex Botten seemed to have scored with just over five minutes left in the game after a give-and-go, but the referees deemed the goal no good as the goalie was pushed into the net, knocking the goal off its pegs.

In the second period, Oswego got on the board first, scoring at the 4:36 mark. Freshman Shawn Hulshof scored his first collegiate goal off a pass from assistant captain Bobby Gertsakis. Just under three minutes later, however, Fredonia was able to even the contest with a goal of its own. Mitch Kaufmann score top shelf off two assists from Long and Owczarczak.
With just 48 second left in the second period Oswego would take the lead. Sophomore-transfer Brandon Adams caught up to an outlet pass from Peter Rodrigues and scored a wrap-around goal. Adams came to the near post one-on-one with Blue Devils' goaltender, freezing the goalie as he quickly went around the net for the score.

The first period went down in scoreless fashion as Oswego controlled play. Early in the period, the Lakers owned an 8-1 advantage in shots over the Blue Devils. They finished with a 14-10 margin in the category after 20 minutes.

Oswego will return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday night when it hosts Buffalo State in another SUNYAC contest.
