OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Oswego State men's soccer team will make its first appearance in the SUNYAC playoffs since 2009 against Brockport at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Â
Despite losing to Cortland this past weekend, Oswego secured the No. 6 seed in the SUNYAC Championship. With the postseason bid, the Lakers will play the third-seeded Golden Eagles under the lights on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium.
Â
Over the past nine seasons, the Lakers have struggled against Brockport, recording one win in 11 meetings (1-7-3). The teams have played evenly in the playoffs, however, going 1-1 in two meetings during that span.
Â
Oswego will look to repeat the 2006 season, when it downed Brockport with a 1-0 win in the SUNYAC Championship Play-In game at East Rochester High School. That was last time the Lakers secured a spot in the conference tournament's semifinal round, which the 2014 squad will look to mimic on Saturday.
Â
Oswego will also try to avenge a playoff heartbreaker to the Golden Eagles in 2008. Both teams played a tight game in the play-in round of that year's SUNYAC Championship, eventually tying at 1-1 in double overtime, leaving penalty kicks to decide which team would advance. Brockport was able to edge the Lakers 3-2 in PKs to secure a spot in the semifinals.
Â
Heading into Saturday's game,
Connor Lunduski leads the Lakers with seven points on the year off of three goals and an assist. The freshman had an assist and goal against SUNY Canton on Wednesday to claim the team lead, hopping over
Harrison Rieber's six points and
Brody Magro's five. On the defensive side,
Todd Lawson has recorded 64 saves in 87 tries for a .736 save percentage.
Â
Top-seeded Oneonta and No. 2 Cortland have earned byes after they finished with the two best regular season conference records. On Wednesday, Nov. 5, Oneonta will play host to the winner of No. 4 Potsdam and No. 5 Geneseo at 1 p.m. In the other semifinal, the winner of Oswego State and Brockport will play at the second-seeded Red Dragons of Cortland at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Â
The winners of the two semifinal contests will play for the SUNYAC Championship at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8. That game will take place at the highest remaining seeds home field.
