OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team is set to host a pair of conference contests this weekend as they battle No. 2 Plattsburgh on Friday at 3 p.m. and return to home ice on Saturday for a 3 p.m. matchup with Cortland. The Plattsburgh contest is Employee Appreciation Night and the Cortland game is Girls Hockey Day.
The Plattsburgh (10-2, 7-0 NEWHL) matchup will be the second time the teams have played this season with Oswego looking to rebound from a 5-0 defeat on November 13. Plattsburgh is 56-0-1 in NEWHL play since the formation of the conference in 2017 with the one tie coming against Oswego on February 3 of 2018.
The Cardinal offense ranks sixth nationally in goals scored (60) and their power play sits second in efficiency (.327). Graduate student Annie Katonka sits third nationally with 1.22 goals per contest. Junior Ivy Boric ranks seventh in the nation in assists per game 1.17.
It will be the first contest in 2022 for Plattsburgh as they are coming off a 2-1 win over No. 10 Norwich in the Norwich East-West Hockey Classic Championship game on December 12. Sophomore Mae Olshansky led them with a goal and an assist in their victory.
For Saturday's opponent, Cortland (10-2, 6-2 NEWHL), the teams have split so far this season with Oswego dropping a 2-1 outcome on November 12 and then scoring four third-period goals in a 5-4 comeback on December 3. Five different Lakers scored in the victory with freshman Mack Hull getting the game winner.
The Red Dragons are coming off a 4-1 win over Potsdam on Saturday graduate student Grace Schnorr scoring two goals and adding an assist. Schnorr currently ranks second in the nation in goals per game (1.25) and Cortland's offense is tenth in goals scored (50).
For Oswego (6-3-1, 3-2-1 NEWHL), the team is coming off a 3-2 setback to Utica College on Sunday. Kyleigh Grugin scored a power play goal to move into the team lead in goals (5) on the year and Hull added her fourth of the season.
As a team, Oswego ranks fourth nationally in power play efficiency (.312). Junior transfer Ariella Haas leads the team with nine points (2G/7A) while sophomore Megan Teachout (4G/4A) and senior transfer Chyne Kennedy (2G/6A) are a point back. In net, sophomore Joanna Hiebert leads the Lakers with four wins while fellow sophomore Bryn White has a team-best .904 save percentage.
After the weekend, the women's ice hockey team hits the road for a 7 p.m. contest at Hamilton College (6-4, 3-3 NESCAC) on Tuesday.
Through the support of Oswego Health, admission into Oswego State Women's Ice Hockey regular season home games is free of charge for the 2021-22 season.
