Lakers Open 2024-25 Season with 6-1 Win

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Women's hockey kicked off their 2024-25 season with an exhibition game against the Rome Grizzlies. The Lakers came out the gate hot, gaining a 4-0 lead in just the first period. Not letting up in the 2nd, Oswego extended their lead to 5-1 heading into the third period. A sixth and final goal scored by Tessa Mucha would secure a 6-1 win for the Lakers over the Rome Grizzlies.

THE BASICS

Final Score:

Oswego 6 (0-0-0, 0-0 SUNYAC)

Rome Grizzlies 1

Location: Deborah F. Stanley Arena | Oswego, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lakers wasted no time, winning the opening face-off and rushing the Grizzlies defensive zone immediately. Senior forward Mackenzie Hull kicked off Oswego's scoring spree, notching a goal just 28 seconds into the game off a pass from first year Elizabeth Cooley. A possessive skating effort from sophomore Helen Vandamme allowed her to follow Hull's scoring initiative, putting the puck top shelf at the 12:49 mark. Just over a minute later at 11:48, first year Katie Demers tallied a 3rd goal for the Lakers. To finish off Oswego's first period scoring spree, senior Rachel Corbett scored a fourth unanswered goal at the 5:04 mark, giving the Lakers a 4-0 lead heading into the 2nd period.

The Rome Grizzlies began to gain some confidence on offense in the opening minutes of the second, but graduate student Jayden Kelley kept Oswego rolling with a fifth goal at the 17:03 mark. Despite this eager start for the Lakers, they seemed to backoff as the period got underway, giving the Grizzlies room to test senior goaltender Lexi Levy. Halfway through the 2nd period, the defensive end of the Lakers bench would see some changes and first year goalie Mia Devivo would replace Lexi Levy in net for the remainder of the game. A late offensive surge by Rome would award them a goal in the final 2 minutes of play, ending Oswego's shutout.

The nature of third period of play would mimic the other two, but Oswego would have the final say with a sixth and final goal scored by senior forward Tessa Mucha
