CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected
Mitch Herlihey of the No. 4/5 Oswego State men's ice hockey team as its Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Jan. 21.
Herlihey was crucial in the Lakers' 5-1 win over Cortland on Friday and their 3-3 tie at No. 7/9 Utica on Saturday, racking up five points. The senior notched two goals and an assist in the victory over Cortland, which was head coach
Ed Gosek's 300
th career win. Less than 40 seconds into the game, Herlihey deflected a shot by
Devin Campbell into the Cortland net to give Oswego a 1-0 advantage. In the second period, Herlihey sent a pass down the ice to
Michael Gillespie and earned an assist on Gillespie's goal. The Ottawa, Ont. native capped off his night with an empty-netter to seal the 5-1 win.
On Saturday, Herlihey and Gillespie teamed up again as Herlihey earned his second assist of the week. Herlihey's biggest contribution though came on a critical goal with less than 30 seconds left in the game. With the Lakers trailing the Pioneers 3-2, Herlihey scored to force the game into overtime.
This is the second time this season that Herlihey has earned the honor. He and the Lakers will return to action this weekend as they travel to Morrisville State to face the Mustangs at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
