Oswego State Athletics Hall of Fame
Schieffer was a prominent player on successful men's basketball squads of the early 1960s, as well as a participant on the men's track and field team. A two-time SUNYAC Basketball All-Tournament Team selection (1961 and 1962), Schieffer helped lead Oswego to a conference crown in 1962. Despite playing over 50 years ago, the Sayville, N.Y. resident is still ranked in the top 10 in several categories in Laker history. In his career, Schieffer collected 9.4 rebounds per game, which is good for fifth on the all-time list, while his 15.9 points per game clip is still 10th in the record books. During his sophomore campaign, Schieffer collected 10.7 rebounds per game, good for 10th-highest single-season rebounding average. He also holds the fifth-most single-game field-goals made (16) and seventh-most single-game rebounds (24). In his track and field career, Schieffer competed in discus, shotput, high jump, long jump, javelin and pole vault. A three-time captain of the squad, Schieffer took a silver medal in the discus at the 1960 New York State Championships and was later named team Most Valuable Player.
