Stanbro was a four year member of the Oswego State wrestling team, where he contributed to a squad that thrived in the early 1980's. He wrestled in three different weight classes (158, 167, 177) during his tenure as a Laker, finishing in the top four of his weight class every year at both SUNYACs and States. The wrestler would go on to receive All-America honors twice during his career, once during the 1981-82 season at the 177-pound weight class and then again the following year at 167 pounds.
